About the data

Where it comes from

Everything here is recorded by the WoWGeek addon while people play, and sent to the site by the uploader app. The addon keeps track of where you go, where you die and level up, the quests you do, what you loot and how you spend your time. Nothing is read from the game's servers.

What the addon records

  • Your travel path: where your character is, every 20 yards you move (100 on a flight path), or every 30 seconds standing still. Not inside dungeons and battlegrounds, where the game doesn't give a position.
  • Events, with where and when: deaths (and a hint at the cause: a mob, another player, falling, drowning), level-ups, quests taken and turned in, places discovered, epic loot, hearthstones, and enemy players you or your group killed.
  • Each session's totals: time spent fighting, moving, resting, at the auction house and so on; XP and gold by source; distance by foot, mount and flight; mobs killed; items looted by quality; consumables, spells and emotes used; reputation gained.
  • A snapshot of the character: name, realm, race, class, faction, hearthstone location, reputation standings and /played.

It doesn't record chat, your guild, your bags or bank, or anything about your account. When another player is involved (they killed you, or you killed them) only their class is kept, never their name.

Who can see what

  • Everyone sees totals across all players: heatmaps, zone stats and charts. No character names, realms or BattleTags appear.
  • You also see your own characters, one at a time or together, under My data: your exact paths, every session, and a replay of each.
  • A place or zone only shows on the public map once 3 or more players have been there, so no one's own route can be picked out.

Getting started

  1. Install the WoWGeek addon and play as usual. The game saves what it recorded when you log out or type /reload.
  2. Install the uploader, and sign in with Battle.net from it.
  3. Upload, or let the uploader send new play by itself each time the game saves.

Your data

Under Settings you can download everything the site holds about you, sign out uploaders you no longer use, or delete your account. Deleting takes your characters, sessions, paths and uploaded files with it, and your data off the map.

Questions

I uploaded, but I can't find my data on the map.
Switch the map to Mine: your own data always shows there. On the public map a place appears once 3 players have been there, and the map catches up within a minute.
The uploader says there's a gap in my travel path.
The addon keeps the most recent path (about a megabyte's worth, which is many hours of play) and drops the oldest when it's full. If a lot of play happens between uploads, the oldest part can be gone before it's sent. Turning on automatic uploads avoids it.
Can someone else upload my character?
A character belongs to the Battle.net account that first uploads it. Anyone else's upload of it is turned away.
Does the addon slow the game down?
No: it checks your position once a second and writes a few small numbers. The game only saves its data when you log out or /reload.
Which games are covered?
WoW Forever and Classic Era are kept apart: each has its own map data, and they're never mixed.
Is this made by Blizzard?
No. WoW Geek is a fan project and isn't affiliated with Blizzard Entertainment. Names of NPCs, quests and items come from Wowhead.
